Opportunity:

Starfish Retention Solutions, Inc., a fast-growing student success company based in Arlington, VA (near Metro), is seeking someone to join a small, dedicated team of software engineers building web applications to help identify students at risk and then connect them to the support resources at a college that can help. We build highly interactive, AJAX-based client applications working with an enterprise-class Java backend.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be a self starter who can take a user story, break it down into tasks, implement it, and then make a suggestion on the next job to do.
  • Work comfortably in an Agile development environment where you get a nice wireframe, and then you know the questions to ask to take it from there.
  • Work in a team environment collaboratively evolving our agile development processes and approaches to meet the needs of our business.
  • Actively making suggestions and communicating with the rest of the team so everyone's aware of what's going on.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • About 5 years of software development experience.
  • An understanding of web development covering all the usual acronyms. (HTML, CSS, XML, JSON, AJAX, HTTP, and JavaScript)
  • Java development experience, specifically with Spring MVC, Hibernate, AspectJ and JSPs.
  • Database development experience, familiarity with stored procedures, triggers, and query tuning.
  • Enjoying work with open source tools. We use Tomcat, Eclipse, Java, Postgres and so on around here.
  • Part-timers must supply their own computer, work phone, and high-speed internet access.
